“Life”

I look down at my shaking hands, “I can’t do this.”

“Yes you can. Don’t worry, I’ll be with you the whole time.” He embraces me and I feel safe for a moment.

Three people in front of us and I’m still nervous.

“Maybe we could go on that Dumbo ride and forget about this one.”

“Melody, I’m right here, trust me, it’s ok.”

I’m dying on the inside as the people in front of us go on. We are next, we are next.

“Ok, here we go, you ready?”

“No.”

He looks down at me and pats my head, “Good.”

I’m guided into the front row of this uncomfortable metal rocket on a track. I look at what’s in my future and my stomach drops.

“I’m going to die,” I say my voice shaking. “This is the last thing I’m going to see. Why did you talk me into this?”

He mocks my pity party with a chuckle and says, “It’s going to be fun, you’ll see, don’t be scared.”

Metal “seat belts” come down on us and we begin the climb as every scenario plays out in my mind, ‘What if we drop into oblivion never to be seen again? What if during the loop we fall out head first? What if…’ Whoosh! Down we go. I feel weightless, and the weird thing is, I like it.

In this moment I let go of all my anxiety and nonsensical doubts and enjoy the ride. I look over at him with his eyes on me, making sure I’m ok. I throw up my hands and shout with joy as my response. He smiles and does the same.

Two short minutes later we come to a stop. He turns to me as the metal bars come up, “I told you.”

I just smile as he guides me off the ride and we move on to the next adventure.
